"The goal of my monthly Almanac is to celebrate the many great things that are happening to better our planet. I am fully aware of the challenges we face in so many areas, too numerous to mention, so I feel that it's more important than ever to support the people who are making an effort to make our environment a healthier and more sustainable place to live."

Green Halloween
is a non-profit, grassroots community initiative to create healthier and more Earth-friendly holidays, starting with Halloween. It began in the Seattle area in 2007 with backers such as Whole Foods Market and was such a huge success that in 2008, the initiative expanded nation-wide. In cities across the country, volunteer coordinators are turning their city’s Halloween holiday healthy and eco-friendly, but many are also raising money for their own, local nonprofit beneficiaries via the initiative.

Happy Halloween!

From October 20th - 23rd CareNow LA will be hosting a free medical, dental and vision care clinic at Los Angeles' Sports Arena. Although most volunteer opportunities have been filled, donations are still welcome!

CareNow LA will provide free medical, dental and vision services to the uninsured, underinsured and underserved in our community. We’ll also provide immunizations and screenings including mammograms and Pap smears. Extensive patient education and counseling will promote wellness, prevention and self-care among our most vulnerable population.

CareNow LA will provide follow-up care for those who need further medical attention beyond the event.. Local clinics and healthcare centers have volunteered to provide medical homes for these patients and will have representatives on site to accept referrals. This is a community wide effort – L.A. helping its own.

Director of Environmental Practices, Anne Carmack,
is a Sustainable Works Eco Star!

Anne Carmack | Outstanding Achievement for Business Greening Program

In 2005, The Ambrose executive team approached Food and Beverage Director Anne Carmack with an invitation to participate in Santa Monica’s Green Business Certification pilot program. A self taught environmentalist, she jumped at the chance to further educate herself on the issues and spent the next year working closely with the Sustainable Works team implementing various hotel wide environmental initiatives. By 2006 The Ambrose was a grand prize winner of Santa Monica’s Sustainable Quality Award.

Determined to take the company’s commitment to sustainability to the next level Anne traded in her apron in 2007 for a role as the hotel’s LEED Project Manager. With the help of REThink Development founder, Greg Reitz, Anne led her team through the year long process of earning the United States Green Building Council’s prestigious LEED for Existing Building certification as well as the EPA’s Energy Star Certification.

In her current role as Director of Environmental Practices she remains committed to the low impact mission of The Ambrose and continues to manage all aspects of the hotel’s sustainability program.
