John Baldessari: Pure Beauty

June 27, 2010–September 12, 2010

John Baldessari is one of the most influential American artists working today. This long overdue retrospective will feature more than 150 works spanning the artist's career from 1962 to the present day, and include works on canvas, photography, videos and artist's books. Baldessari's text and image paintings from the mid-1960s are widely recognized as among the earliest examples of Conceptual Art, while his 1980s photo compositions derived from film stills rank as pivotal to the development of appropriation art and other practices that address the social and cultural impact of mass culture. Throughout and continuing today, Baldessari's interest in language, both written and visual, raises questions about the nature of communication. The exhibition is curated by LACMA's Leslie Jones, Prints and Drawings, with Jessica Morgan, Contemporary Art, at Tate Modern. It will also feature a special installation conceived just for this retrospective.

Santa Monica Connects with Residents on the Go with New App for the iPhone

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Potholes that need filling, trees that need maintenance, and graffiti that needs removing are now an iPhone tap away in Santa Monica with the launch of the City’s new GORequest mobile applet.

iPhone users simply open the applet, select an issue, take a picture, and tap submit – the applet knows the exact location and sends the issue directly to the staff member who can fix it.

“Santa Monica is known to be a leader in the use of technology for providing information and services to the public. The new mobile applet is the latest example of the City using technology for connecting government with the community and for improved customer service”, noted Jory Wolf, Chief Information Officer.

The GPS and camera features built into the iPhone make it simple for residents to alert City officials about a variety of issues around the clock while they're mobile. Residents will know that their issue went to the right person without ever going to an office, making a phone call or sitting down at a computer, and they receive status updates on their requests.

The City is receiving tremendous benefits from this new technology. A picture is worth a thousand words – when a resident taps the send button, their iPhone sends a photo and the precise location directly to the right person who can fix the issue. This efficiency saves the City time and money while improving service.

The iPhone applet is downloaded from the iPhone App Store by searching for GORequest.

July 4th Fireworks in Marina del Rey!!!

"The traditional fireworks extravaganza over Marina del Rey takes place annually on July 4th at 9 p.m., and lasts approximately 20 minutes. Music coordinated with the fireworks display can be heard on KXLU FM radio, 88.9. The music is also relayed over loudspeakers in Burton Chace Park.

Presented by the famed Zambelli Pyrotechnics, which originated more than 100 years ago in Italy, the display will follow the Italian tradition of huge finales. The event is sponsored by Los Angeles County Department of Beaches & Harbors."

Where to Watch the Fireworks
Fireworks are launched from a floating barge located in the waters of the main channel between Fisherman’s Village and the Breakwater (the ocean entrance to the harbor).
Depending upon weather and cloud cover on the night of the show, the fireworks can usually be seen throughout the marina, and from the waterfront side of most hotels, restaurants, beaches, apartments and anchorages. You may be able to glimpse the fireworks from afar from Playa del Rey and Venice Beach Pier. Popular locations include:

• Fisherman’s Village, 13755 Fiji Way (2 blocks west of Lincoln Blvd.)
• Burton Chace Park, 13650 Mindanao Way (1 block west of Admiralty Way)
• Marina Beach (Mother’s Beach), 4101 Admiralty Way (1 block south of Washington Blvd.)
